Dry & Heavy put on an epic dub show as the sun was going down on Saturday night at the Moon Shine area. Listening to the shattered, bouncy drum beats that emanated from the stage it brought back memories of other intense dub acts like Twilight Sound System, Zion Train and The Disciples which I had seen play on the very same stage in years past. The people with the instruments played spectacularly but something that perhaps some of the non-reggae fans in the audience didn’t realize is that with dub, the person at the mixing desk in the sound booth is just as much a part of the band as the musicians themselves. Back in the year 2000, Dry & Heavy released what I consider to be one of the best dub albums since the 80’s by going to Jamaica and employing the mixing skills of a maser dub craftsman, King Jammy. The essence and power of that album, In the Jaws of the Tiger, could be heard in the incredibly technical echo and delay effects done by their person behind the mixing desk.
