Asagiri Jam

My first instinct as a first timer at Asagiri Jam is to compare it to its “bigger brother”, Fuji Rock Festival. It’s familiar to me, and there are plenty of similarities: they’re both organized by Smash, both are camping-friendly (compared with Summer Sonic, Loud Park and other famous fests in concrete stadiums and concert halls), the obvious connection to Mount Fuji (whether real or stretching it a bit)… the list goes on.

Asagiri JamIt would also be easy to say that in comparing the two that the bigger, flashier and more famous one would win, and yet… And yet there’s something about Asagiri that you can’t quite put your finger on…

Asagiri JamWhile Fuji Rock consumes you whole and spits you out leaving you satisfied but exhausted, the smaller Fujinomiya-based Asagiri welcomes you in, offers a seat and hands you a drink. When the sun’s shining (and it’s been mostly sunny over the years), it’s as close to heaven on Earth as I’ve ever come.

There’s a warmth that goes beyond a group of individuals coming together for one purpose. People come for the music (of course), but also for the festivities on the side, the scenic beauty of Mt Fuji in the background, the open space for dogs an children to run around (almost completely) as they please. It’s an event that is bigger than the music, bigger than the sum of the parts.

It’s freedom.
