Boomtown Fair
Now in its eighth year, Boomtown Fair is a festival that has seen it’s popularity increase to the point where tickets can sell out before the line-up has been announced. Set in the Winchester countryside, it’s uniquely immersive world of cowboys, dandies, flappers, and many more theatrical spectacles has a draw which keeps people coming back for the experience offered as well as the guarantee of a broad range of music to suit almost any musical taste.

When we last attended Boomtown in 2014, headliners included NOFX and Shaggy were complimented by a plethora of festival favourites like Molotov Jukebox and Beans of Toast who return to the festival this year. Boomtown knows its audience well and caters to them with a fair dose of 90s and early noughties acts from the UK and further afield mixing in with musical legends. On the larger stages So Solid Crew jostle up against The Levellers, Madness and Damien Marley, Asian Dub Foundation, Parov Stelar and Fat Freddy’s Drop. Elsewhere, the Bang Hai palace stage caters to drum n bass with independent label Critical Records taking over the stage for the whole day on Saturday. The Ballroom whisks you back to the roaring twenties with an electro-swing line-up and the China Town Courtyard and Devil Kicks Dancehall bring a stomping range of ska, punk and everything in-between.

Boomtown Fair With 24 main stages and many smaller ones to stumble across there’s no way you could cover everything available, but one of the pleasures of the festival is that there’s always something to be discovered, be it a guy dressed as your granny spinning tunes in his living room, or a somber funeral being performed in a graveyard in Barrio Loco, to a band you’ve never seen before making your weekend. The Boomtown “city” provides plenty of places to visit, allowing for different moods and tastes. Perhaps a wander around Whistler’s Green to try your hand at arts and crafts or a listen in at Speaker’s Corner in the afternoon might be a nice break from the musical madness, while if you want to party the night away DSTRKT 5’s cyberpunk aesthetics and hard-hitting beats offer the perfect place to dance away the small hours.

We’ll be heading to the festival this coming weekend so expect a very special report from the UK next week.
