Melodic death metallers GYZE closed out their short Northern Hell Song album tour at Shibuya’s O-East at the end of July. Hailing from the wintry climes of Hokkaido, the band brought something of the icy charge of winter with them with the set list heavy on new songs. The band have been absent from the Japanese live scene the last year or so, taking time to write their new album as well as embarking on a lengthy European tour, the results of which show in the band’s performance – there’s an undefinable change in stage presence, an ease of playing, and a bigger crowd who know all the guitar melodies. GYZE have always been based around singer-guitarist Ryoji’s athletic guitar-playing and the fans were not disappointed by the lengthy and intricate new additions to the band’s oeuvre.

GYZE will be back in action next month supporting Finnish power metallers Battle Beast. Catch them at Akasaka Blitz on September 27th.
