Asagiri Jam

I have heard this phrase at a festival before, entering Burning Man festival for the first time in 2007, and I quickly learned that it means the festival attendees feel like family. While 10,000+ people come to Asagiri Jam every year, there is a great percentage of repeat attendance. Most people I met this year had come 3, 4 or 5 times previous, some even more. That is a very good sign Asagiri Jam is doing something right.

So this feeling of coming “home” means there are bonds forged, and personal growth and transformative change happening in a very short time span of just one weekend. Some of this opening up, letting loose, making friends, sleeping under stars, dancing, cultivating latent interests or passions, learning a new skill, even just trying a new foreign food or blowing bubbles, all these small experiences bundled up and set at the foot of one of the most revered and respected mountains in all the world…It would be hard amidst such beauty and opportunity to not want to call such a magical place home. Like Peter Pan’s Neverland or any other dream world too perfectly innocent, colorful and fun to be real…

Maybe Asagiri Jam is what Dorothy was tapping her red shiny heels about, because that is what I am doing today as I set out my black pants and button shirt for work tomorrow. Oh, Asagiri Jam, “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like…”
