On Fire

The Rock Tigers
From the moment the large screen in front of the stage rose to reveal The Rock Tigers, the Seoul quintet were literally out to deliver a smoking hot performance. Giant flames covered Roy's way-too-cool upright bass, while tiny fire images adorned the top of vocalist Velvet Geena's leather boots. The sexy siren's matching black mini skirt likely had more than a few male attendees feeling a little hot under the collar as well.

The Rock Tigers      Opening with the brand new "Spring Days," the band's mix of pop, punk, and rockabilly had the mainly Korean audience shaking their asses right away. When not playing acoustic guitar, Velvet Geena matched them move for move. The Rock Tigers' male contingent were no slouches either with Roy bouncing around while banging away on his bass, straddling the large instrument as he leaned overtop of the cheering crowd, and at one point even lifting it above his head. Guitarist and singer Tiger fell to his knees several times while performing and continually cupped his hand to his ear to incite more noise from fans.

Drawing primarily from last year's Oldies But Goodies disc, Velvet Geena and Tiger traded off verses on fantastic cuts such as "Onesided Love" and "Then We Were." Killer covers such as "Blue Suede Shoes," "That's All Right Mama," and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" were given the full rock n' roll treatment with lots of flashing lights and smoke complementing Rock Tigers' competent playing.

The Rock Tigers      The highlight of the first half of the show came during "Leather Bike Jacket Boy" from 2003's Come On Let's Go. A guest appearance by always wild Galaxy Express guitarist Jong Hyun Park made the already high energy level skyrocket as the band tore through the near-perfect road anthem. Park was his usual self as he leapt onto the drum riser and whipped around while Tiger sang. Velvet Geena shook her long hair and laughed while dancing from end to end of the large stage. The track ended with Park, Velvet Geena, Tiger, and many fans screaming the chorus.

After short sets by Crying Nut and Korean pop singer Tei, The Rock Tigers re-emerged in fresh outfits ready to thrill once again. The second half of their concert featured more fast-paced 50s and 60s-influenced numbers delivered with the same zeal that has helped established them as one of the top acts in Seoul's burgeoning indie scene. Members of local faves Crying Nut and Kingston Rudieska joined in at different points creating even more of a party vibe inside Sangsang Madang Live Hall that lasted right up until the final notes of closing cut "La Bamba."
