Korean Punk Royalty

Gumx
Invited to open the Seoul date of Tokyo act Nicotine's "Soundquake" tour, local punks Gumx may have only had a too-short 30-minute set to work with, but that didn't stop them from getting the growing crowd all riled up with nearly a dozen energetic, hard-hitting cuts.

Gumx      Emerging to the sounds of "Dancing Queen," charismatic guitarist and vocalist Yongwon Lee (who sported a T-shirt from another Tokyo band, Electric Eel Shock) cupped his hand to his ear as he walked on stage encouraging the audience to make more noise. They happily obliged. Shouting "Let's go," Yongwon, bassist Keunyoung Lee and drummer Gun Choi ripped their way through the powerful lead track from their third full-length, last year's excellent Old, "Silence The Enemy's Guns." As the song ended they kicked into "Greenfreakzilla" without pause, its fact-paced, infectious melodies bringing big smiles to the eagerly bouncing bodies up front. An awesome take of the anthemic "Perfect" from their 2003 debut, What's Been Up?, saw even more attendees taking full advantage of the spacious performance space to dance and jump while shouting along with Yongwon.

Gumx      The heartfelt rocker "My Bassist Likes This Song" came off a lot heavier live as Choi abused his kit and was one of the show's strongest numbers - no small feat considering each offering was so well-received. Brand new hardcore-infused song "We Have No Producer" from the band's recently recorded Japanese EP (set to be released in the coming months by Toy's Factory) also sounded fantastic.

Gumx      Fan favourite "Hymn To Love" closed out the performance. Yongwon and Keunyoung both showed off an animated array of playful facial expressions while working the audience into one final frenzy with their tight brand of skate punk. An extended, stadium-style ending with blinding flash bulbs, pounding drums, and lots of guitar noise wrapped things up on an epic note and had everyone screaming for more great music as Gumx left the stage.

Easily showing why they are amongst the best in Korea's underground music scene, to say Nicotine had a tough act to follow would be a huge understatement.
