Lily Allen @ Shibuya O-East(5th Jun. '09)
The Joie de Lily
Lily Allen is one charming lass. She put on one of the best club shows I've seen simply by being sincerely happy to be putting on a club show, and really happy to see all of us there. Not the sort of attention you usually get from a pop star.
But she steps outside the box of pop stardom in more ways than that. Listening to her records, she could just as well sing live to a backing tape, but instead she has rehearsed a pretty incredible band--I watched that drummer like a hawk, and he was really playing every single intricate rhythm and accent I heard. And thank god for the Brits letting women with talent become stars, instead of picking singers and actresses on the basis of swimsuit pictorials. (Don't take that the wrong way; Allen is plenty cute, hot, darling, etc. etc.)
She also gave respect to the crowd by speaking to them (us, I suppose) in her normal English, rather than the "everything I say is funny because it's simplified" English we normally get. Take note, gaijin performers: if you say it, they will (mostly) understand. And be grateful. You come all this way; give us who you really are.
She played every cut from the new record, "It's Not Me, It's You", as well as her cover of Britney's "Womanizer", and four from her first record (but no "Alfie"! Lily, where's "Alfie"?! That song should never not be played!) It was a brazen vote of confidence in the new material, and it paid off. Every bit of winking joy at the absurd comedy of the passing scene that she puts on record comes across in her stage presence. It's everybody else in the world that's a twat, but in here, we're all on her side.
She got country on It's Not Fair, jazzy on He Wasn't There, and started everybody arm waving 1/3 of the way in on Who'd Have Known, a gesture which would be reprised with great verve during the encore. I even danced a little in my Too-Tall-Gaijin space in the back of the main floor; it was an infectious enthusiasm.
